  • The Local Original: Artists of the 941 are called to crank it up once again with submissions for Noise Ordinance 2 now being accepted

Published December 8, 2010 If you happened to attend the first incarnation of Noise Ordinance back in February, then you have a pretty good idea why it won the title of “Best Local Music Festival” in our Best of the Suncoast Readers’ Poll last month. The hyper-local, yet intriguingly unfamiliar gathering helped to introduce the various sub-scenes of our largely splintered music community to one another, revealing for the first time a complete picture of what the “Suncoast music scene” actually looks like. Bands saw their fellow area musicians displaying high morale and excited about the uniquely artistic environment they were creating.  And everyone finally seemed to figure out where they fit within the larger local scene, respecting and supporting the contributions from each part of the whole. Since that first go around, Noise Ordinance co-founders Claire Franklin, Katherine Derr and Ed Midler createdSarasotaMusicScene.com along with promoter Chris Falk. Falk has since moved to Michigan, but that won’t stop the remaining trio from bringing back Sarasota’s original music showcase in the form of Noise Ordinance 2, now officially presented bySarasotaMusicScene.com. With the submission selection process fully underway months ahead of last year’s call out, SMS plans to follow up a successful first year event with a mind blowing sequel. (more…)
  • WSLR shake-up: A change at Sarasota’s community radio station leaves the anti-noise ordinance movement without one of its most prominent voices

Published April 21, 2010 TERRY “T-BONE” RHODES: “I’m going to get behind [the scene] one way or another” For the past year Music Scene and Be Seen — broadcast on WSLR 96.5 LPFM — has been Sarasota’s only radio show focused wholly on local original music. Terry “T-Bone” Rhodes started the project with that goal in mind, but he also wanted to bring attention to Sarasota’s much-hated noise and entertainment ordinances. He took full advantage of his mouthpiece, playing local records, mentioning local concerts and hammering on the noise restrictions every time he took the air. FCC regulations stipulate that since WSLR is a nonprofit, non-commercial station, its programmers cannot promote events they are directly involved with. WSLR had reprimanded Rhodes for pushing the limits of those rules in the past — and two Mondays ago, the station went one step further. WSLR manager Arlene Sweeting informed Rhodes that he would be suspended from the station for six months, effectively canceling Music Scene and Be Seen. (more…)
  • Online organizing: Music Scene and Be Seen launches a new website in an effort to unify supporters of original live music

Published February 17, 2010 If you turn your FM dial to WSLR 96.5 from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoons you will hear a pair of radio personalities that have become Sarasota’s biggest voices against unfair noise regulations. Terry “T-Bone” Rhodes and his sidekick, Chris “Quazi” Young, invite guests onto their community radio show, Music Scene and Be Seen, each week to listen to some local original music and hammer on the area noise ordinances, even more so recently with guests from the upcoming Noise Ordinance CD. “Quaz and I are the rebels of the radio station,” says Rhodes. “They say, ‘You’re talking about the noise ordinance again?’ And we say, ‘Yeah, it’s our pet peeve.’” While the radio show has been running for nine months, Rhodes says the idea came much sooner. He had developed a business plan in 2006 that included both radio and TV shows along with a website, all focusing on the Suncoast original music scene and the venues that support it. “Way back then I was talking about the noise ordinance,” he says. “When I got here I was so disappointed that people accepted the same cover crap. I was expecting this vibrant original scene.” (more…)
